Yet the landscape visitors see today was once something very different. Yet the park is the result of several historical layers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-49fb4362a2e853272c23a59c8cb28275 wp-block-paragraph\">Originally, the area was a <strong>marshland<\/strong>. The name of the nearby district, <strong>Ballyphehane<\/strong>\u2014from the Gaelic <em>Baile an Feithe\u00e1in<\/em>, meaning \u201ctown of marshy grass\u201d\u2014reflects this landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-8cfa0728a94b34c64b3f2f40573785c3 wp-block-paragraph\">From <strong>1963 to 2009<\/strong>, the valley became the <strong>main landfill site for Cork<\/strong>, gradually filling with millions of tonnes of waste. The project required extensive environmental remediation to stabilise the landfill and make the area accessible to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-5197d5bf7c1c161f3207202362074d60 wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/kieranmccarthy.ie\/\">Kieran McCarthy<\/a>, the project also highlights an unresolved challenge in Ireland\u2019s waste management system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-2efee2b3e38d621894aa93927929a267 wp-block-paragraph\">During the interview, he explains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abThere has been a growing shift from landfill to waste export. In reality, most of Ireland\u2019s waste is probably exported to the Netherlands for incineration because it is cheaper than building incinerators here.\u00bb<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-ed84f491b21cab75ffc2d8090efa546f wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, although the landfill was closed, the wider issue of waste management has not disappeared. It has simply moved elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-contrast-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-cffb32d877b6e03f756e117761998862 wp-block-paragraph\">The park still sits above the former landfill. Beneath the grassy slopes lies decomposing waste, effectively <strong>a buried mountain of rubbish<\/strong>.
